About River Kwai Bridge

This bridge carried the Burma Railway, known in Thailand as the Death Railway, across the river at Kanchanaburi. The Japanese army forced Allied prisoners of war and Asian laborers to build the line during World War II, and tens of thousands of prisoners died from brutal conditions, disease and hunger. The river was the Mae Klong until it was renamed Khwae Yai in the 1960s. Pierre Boulle's novel, largely fictional, made the name famous.
