About Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan

This is the main Buddhist temple of Nakhon Si Thammarat, once a key trade crossroads between the Indian and Pacific oceans. The monastery was founded in the 8th century, on a site where a Hindu shrine once stood. King Sri Dhammasokaraja built the main stupa, Phra Borommathat Chedi, in the early 13th century as a symbol of Theravada Buddhism in the region. The temple houses a relic of the Buddha.
