About Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep rises to 1,676 meters, about 15 kilometers from the center of Chiang Mai. It's one of twin granite peaks, along with the slightly higher Doi Pui. The temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits partway up at around 1,060 meters and dates back to the 14th century. Below 1,000 meters the forest is mostly deciduous, with evergreen forest above. The mountain takes its name from Vasuthep, a hermit said to have lived here over a thousand years ago.
