About Phayao Lake

Locals call it Kwan Phayao, kwan being a northern Thai word for a lake or large swamp. It's the largest freshwater lake in the north and the fourth largest in Thailand, covering about 1,980 hectares. It's shallow, at about 1.5 meters, and shaped almost like a half moon. Eighteen creeks feed it, and it holds about 50 species of fish. The lake took its current form after a fisheries dam was built on the Ing River in 1935.
